South Asian region holds 30% of the world children Invasive disease caused by S.pneumoniae (Pneumococci) is one of the important causes of child hood death in the region. In many developed countries effective vaccination against this bacteria has dramatically reduced the burden of Pneumococcal disease.
South Asian Pneumococcal Alliance (SAPNA) Project is aimed at reducing the burden of Pneumococcal disease in the South Asian countries. The program is funded by Global Alliance on Vaccine and Immunization (GAVI) through the Accelerated Development and Implementation Plan (ADIP) at John's Hopkins School of Public Health. The program will produce developing valid data to assest policy makers to introduce preventive vaccination in children in the countries of India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Pakistan to prevent serious infections caused by S.pneumoniae.
